Björneborg starts new sustainable logistics solution
In our pursuit to find sustainable logistics solutions we are happy to start a new logistical flow by railway from our site in Björneborg to central europe. If this works out well, we believe we can send around 2/3 of our deliveries by railway the coming years with significantly lower CO2 emissions. This is an extension of our Greenforge® concept which covers scope 1 and 2. This will significantly reduce our emissions also in scope 3.
In freight transport, it is common to state the emissions in g CO2 per tonne-kilometer (tkm), i.e. how much CO2 is produced to transport 1 tonne over1 kilometer. The emissions for truck transport are 111g CO2 per tkm and for goods trains in general 17g CO2 per tkm. This means that more than 6 times as much CO2 is produced for every kilometer that goods are transported by road. In Sweden which is about half of the transportation length, the difference is even greater thanks to the high share of fossil free electricity making the CO2 emission close to net zero. That means that truck transport gives about 12 !!! times higher CO2 emissions compared with this route. Besides the climate effect it will reduce heavy traffic and improve the traffic flow and safety on our roads.
