World’s first Greenforge®-generator shaft delivered to ABB for a geothermal power plant.
Björneborg Steel have delivered the world’s first Greenforge®-generator shaft, made from recycled scrap and fossil free production to ABB. The generator will be delivered to Ormat Technologies who is building a geothermal power plant in Ijen, Indonesia. The first stage will generate 35 MW when up and running in 2025.

The generator is designed according to Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) and achieves an impressive 98,7% efficiency. As such this will be a power plant producing green energy being built with the absolute best efficiency and the smallest possible carbon footprint.
“This is cutting-edge technology and manufacturing going green for real. We have had a great partnership with ABB for decades and this is a testament of our collaboration and joint developments where we make a true difference for generations to come” – says CEO Håkan Dedorsson, Björneborg Steel.
“Sustainability is high on our agenda and we are constantly seeking ways to minimize our climate footprint. With the Greenforge®-concept developed by Björneborg Steel we see that it’s possible to have a fossil free production method for the generator shafts which are a big component of our generators” – says Global Business Line Manager David Bjerhag, ABB.
Roey Shachar, Electrical Engineering Department Manager, Ormat states:
“Together, we are raising the bar for excellence in power generation, while also advancing the cause of a greener and more sustainable future”.
