Inauguration of world unique Greenforge® furnace
When some steel and forging producers postpone their green transition, Björneborg
follows its schedule and today, May 12, inaugurates the last major cornerstone of its
Greenforge® concept, which involves completely climate-neutral production, from
scrap to finished components. The furnace is specially adapted and unique in the
world to be operated with the fossil-free gas rDME (DiMethylEther) and is also much
more energy-efficient than the old furnace.
Development of the new combustion technology is a joint project between Björneborg, Flogas Sverige AB and Swerim. The project is also called DME but stands for “Demonstration of Environmentally Friendly Energy Gas” and is partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
– We are of course extremely happy and proud that we have been able to drive our transition in this way and invest despite tough times, a turbulent geopolitical situation and necessary restructuring. It shows Björneborg’s responsibility for the green transition and the type of supplier we are. We lead the development and do what we say. With this transition, we also become in principle completely insensitive to the supply of fossil fuels, which we now also see as a major advantage from a security policy point of view, concludes Håkan Dedorsson.

– Thanks to the close and well-functioning collaboration with Björneborg Steel and Swerim, we can now demonstrate a full-scale implementation of rDME as a replacement for fossil LPG. Flogas’ mission is to support our customers in the transition to fossil-free fuels, and this project is clear proof that the transition is already possible today, says Thomas Edvardsen, CEO of Flogas Sweden.
