Significant order package to Björneborg Steel
3 april, 2024Björneborg Steel has secured an order and is about to deliver the world’s first GreenForge® propeller shafts to Berg Propulsion. The shafts are made from recycled scrap and climate neutral production using the Björneborg GreenForge® technology.
Berg Propulsion will supply the shafts to three Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) ro-ro vessels due in service 2026 to carry Airbus A320 parts across the Atlantic. These vessels are already set to take advantage of sustainable wind power by rotor sails with the addition of an efficient hybrid propulsion system, power management and control technology from Berg.
The combination of a vessel aiming at reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 50% together with propeller shafts, which are reducing their CO2 production footprint by close to 100%, is truly unique and a sustainability benchmark within the maritime industry.
“We are honored to work together with a maritime sustainability and technology leader as Berg Propulsion in such a prestigious project. Berg shows outstanding commitment to sustainability in true actions” says CEO Håkan Dedorsson, Björneborg Steel.
Kajsa de Mello, Operations Director, BERG Propulsion said: “BERG is delighted to work with Sweden’s cutting-edge steel industry and pioneer the use of maritime GreenForge®. It is fitting that the world’s first sea-going application should be for ships which also aim to halve CO2 emissions crossing the Atlantic.
The climate neutral GreenForge® technology is based upon recycled scrap, 100% fossil free electricity for melting and then various biogases for heating such as LBG, rDME and/or bio propane instead of using traditional fossil gases like LNG and Propane. GreenForge® technology is constantly being developed and for this delivery, bio-propane from Flogas Sverige AB have also been used.
“We are ramping up production based on the climate neutral GreenForge® process, and we look forward to helping BERG’s customers make the green choice that will benefit generations to come.” says CEO Håkan Dedorsson, Björneborg Steel.
The shafts for this project will be delivered from March to the end of June. Björneborg aims to enable a shift of its full production to the GreenForge® process in 2027.
